Speaking Next Week on IPv6 and VoIP Security at 7th Real-Time Communications Conference in Chicago
Continue Reading: Speaking Next Week on IPv6 and VoIP Security at 7th Real-Time Communications Conference in ChicagoIf any of you will be in Chicago next week, October 4-6, 2011, for the 7th Annual Real-Time Communications Conference & Expo, I’ll be there on the 5th and 6th as a speaker.I’ll be speaking twice. First on Wednesday the 5th at 4pm on “The Current State of VoIP Security“, wearing my VOIPSA hat and leading off a series of talks about security. I’ll be providing an overview of the main threats to VoIP and communications security in general, leading the way into the two more specific talks following mine.
I’m rather excited that my second session will be my first public appearance wearing my new Internet Society hat (if you are not aware, I’ve posted details about my recent move) and will of course be about IPv6… more specifically “How IPv6 Will Impact SIP And Telecom“.
Due to ongoing events on the personal front, I wasn’t sure that I was going to make it out there… and quite frankly there’s still a chance that I won’t… but I should be out there.
If you look at the conference schedule, the speakers include outstanding people involved with so many different aspects of real-time communications. It should be truly an…

Speaking at SIPNOC Next Week on SIP Interoperability and Security (and Joining an IPv6 BOF)
Continue Reading: Speaking at SIPNOC Next Week on SIP Interoperability and Security (and Joining an IPv6 BOF)Next week in the DC area (Herndon, VA) there will be a unique event taking place – SIPNOC: The SIP Network Operators Conference. This event is organized by the SIP Forum and will bring together a great collection of service providers and carriers to share and learn from each other about the realities behind providing SIP-based services today. It will be a great place for those providing real-time communications over IP networks to look at how we can continue to expand and improve the services. There’s a packed agenda at the event that includes many great sessions I’m looking forward to attending. I’ll be there speaking about SIP interoperability and some of the lessons we’ve learned at Voxeo as we’ve interconnected our SIP cloud to that of so many carriers. I’ll also be donning my VOIP Security Alliance (VOIPSA) hat to participate on a panel about security.
And naturally given my intense interest in IPv6 these days (and all my writing about IPv6, I’ll of course be joining in to the “IPv6 Readiness” BOF planned for Tuesday, April 26.
I’m very much looking forward to this first SIPNOC event… if you are already planning to be there please do say…

Continue Reading: Speaking at ITEXPO / Cloud Communications Summit Jan 20-22 in Miami…On Monday I’m heading down to Voxeo’s corporate headquarters in Orlando, FL, but the week after that I’ll be heading down to ITEXPO in Miami Beach, FL, where several of us from Voxeo will be speakingIronically, I won’t be speaking actually at the formal “ITEXPO”, but rather at the Ingate SIP Trunking Seminars and then at a new “Cloud Communications Summit” coordinated by Thomas Howe. Somehow my sessions wound up back-to-back… I’m just hoping the rooms aren’t too far apart!
Voxeo will also have a couple of exciting announcements, so it should be a great event. Here’s my speaking schedule:

11:30-12:00, Ingate SIP Trunking Seminars, Dan York
“The Enterprise Edge and Security”
Representing the VoIP Security Alliance (VOIPSA), Dan York will give an overview of security concerns related to Unified Communications and VoIP with a focus on SIP trunking.

Heading down to ITEXPO in Miami on Feb 2-4…
Continue Reading: Heading down to ITEXPO in Miami on Feb 2-4…Will you be down in Miami at ITEXPO February 2-4? If so, please feel free to drop me a note and perhaps we can connect somewhere there.I’ll be arriving Monday afternoon and then on Tuesday, February 3rd, I’ll be donning my VOIPSA VoIP Security hat to participate in a SIP Trunking Workshop sponsored by Ingate Systems on “SIP Trunking And Security“. These workshops are always fun to do and as they are free to anyone attending ITEXPO (even just with an exhibit pass), they are usually well-attended. I’ll be bringing my recording gear, too, and the talk will eventually go out in my Blue Box Podcast feed so you will be able to hear it later.
Speaking of recording… I’ll have my video gear, too, and so if you have some new product or service in the “emerging communications” space that you think I might be interested in recording for my “Emerging Tech Talk” video podcast… well… pitch me. 🙂 I know I’ll be recording a number of videos down there and I would certainly consider doing some more.
Wednesday evening I’ll be driving back to Orlando and in Voxeo’s office on Thursday and Friday so if you’re…

“Discover Best Practices for Secure Unified Communications” – a webinar I’ll be giving tomorrow
Continue Reading: “Discover Best Practices for Secure Unified Communications” – a webinar I’ll be giving tomorrowCross-posted from Voice of VoIPSA:What are you doing tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at 1pm US Eastern time? If you are around, you are welcome to join a free webinar I’ll be giving on “Best Practices for Secure Unified Communications“.
From time-to-time, you’ll notice that those of us working with VOIPSA will take part in seminars/webinars offered by members of VOIPSA and we definitely enjoy doing so. For instance, as readers of the blog know, I’ve been speaking at Ingate’s SIP Trunking seminars for quite some time now. We’re generally open to speaking at anyone’s event or webinar – as long as they understand that there is no endorsement of the company/vendors’s products/services and that we are there to provide an industry-neutral point-of-view.
So tomorrow at 1pm US Eastern I’ll be speaking as part of Mitel’s “Discovery Series” where they invite in guest speakers from the industry. You can join the webinar for free at Mitel’s site. They asked me to speak about the threats/risks to voice over IP and unified communications and talk about best practices for protecting them. Here’s the abstract:
Discover Best Practices for Secure Unified Communications
Presented by: Dan York, Voice Over IP Security Alliance…

Continue Reading: Slides from my ITEXPO security talk – SIP Trunking and Security in an Enterprise NetworkEarlier this month out at ITEXPO in Los Angeles, I participated in the Ingate SIP Trunking seminars as I have been doing for the last year or so. My talk was “SIP Trunking and Security in an Enterprise Network“. The slides are available for viewing or download from my SlideShare account and I’ll also embed them here in this post.I did record the presentation in both audio and video and hope to be making that available as a Blue Box podcast some time soon. I’ll then sync the slides to the audio. Meanwhile… enjoy the slides! SIP Trunking & Security in an Enterprise NetworkView SlideShare presentation or Upload your own. (tags: telephony danyork)

Tracking iSkoot’s security issue exposing Skype usernames and passwords
Continue Reading: Tracking iSkoot’s security issue exposing Skype usernames and passwordsOver on the Voice of VOIPSA weblog, I have been tracking a security issue in the iSkoot program that was transmitting your Skype username and password in the clear. The post, its comments, and the corresponding links off of it make for some interesting reading. It also shows the speed at which the blogosphere can react and potentially help sort things out. In the space of about 48 hours, a problem was found, confirmed, identified by the vendor and apparently will be fixed shortly. I’ll be writing more about this later today over on the Voice of VOIPSA weblog, but for now I’ll just say that it’s great to see that the problem is being dealt with.

I’ll be down at VoiceCon Orlando in March 2008…
Continue Reading: I’ll be down at VoiceCon Orlando in March 2008…FYI, I will be down at VoiceCon Orlando on March 17-20, 2008. I’m moderating two panel sessions (see the schedule). First, up, bright and early at 8am on Tuesday, March 18th, I’ll be moderating a panel on “Top VoIP Security Threats“. This should be a fun one as it has VOIPSA Chair Dave Endler, Mark Collier of SecureLogix and Sachin Joglekar of Sipera Systems. I know all three of the guys, particularly Dave and Mark who have both worked on VOIPSA matters, and this session should be a good bit of fun. I’m planning on making it a rather interactive session. 🙂At the other end of the show, on Thursday, March 20th, at 11:45am, I’ll be moderating a panel “Open Source for Enterprise Voice: How Much, How Soon?“. This would should be interesting because it has Bill Miller from Digium (makers of Asterisk), who I know well, and M Raza from 3Com… and then Tony Pereira from Nortel! 3Com’s presence on the panel isn’t particularly surprising given their relationship with Digium, but it will be interesting to see Nortel’s view on the matter.
All in all it should be quite an interesting show. Lots of good sessions and, I’m…
