Skype 4.0 beta discussion on Squawk Box podcast now available

skype_logo.pngI realized today that although I wrote that Skype's Mark Bartlett would be joining a Squawk Box conf call back on Friday, June 20th, I never followed up with the link to the show.

That discussion about the Skype 4.0 beta is available from Saunderslog.com. I could not participate in the actual call, but it sounded interesting. I'm still not thrilled by Skype's cross-platform "answer", but it is what it is. Jim Courtney over at Skype Journal has a longer writeup about the call which covers some of the main points of the call.

Skype 4.0 seriously disrupts the Skype UI - is this a good thing?

skype_logo.pngWill Skype's new Skype 4.0 user interface simplify the experience and brings in masses of new users? Or will it annoy and alienate the longtime (and often paying) users of Skype?

As a Mac user perpetually left behind in Skype's development process, I can't personally report on the new 4.0 beta which is Windows-only and apparently due out tomorrow, but reports are starting to come out... TechCrunch says "Skype 4.0 Beta: It's All About Video" and Andy Abramson discusses how this might allow future video advertising (and how Skype needs a CTO). I expect we should be hearing from the Skype Journal folks soon as well.

In watching Skype's three Daily Motion videos about the release, I had these quick thoughts:

  • The Skype window now covers the full screen. Instead of having a separate window for your contacts, separate windows for each chat (which we Mac users have had collected together in a single chat window with a "drawer" for some time) and a separate window for each call, it's all in one window. While I can see this being a benefit for new users, as someone who has been using Skype for now... what?... 3 or 4 years? I have to say that I like having separate windows! Especially on my Mac where I use Spaces on Leopard and do have different Skype windows in different windows. My initial reaction is that I do definitely hope that the full-screen mode is an option, i.e. there's an advanced setting or something that lets us maintain "classic Skype" look and feel.
  • Multi-modal conversations are better integrated. - In the past, you could have a video conversation and separately have a Skype IM chat going. These were two different windows and so you of course had the issue of having to keep track of those two different windows. While I was personally okay with this as I often work with two monitors and could put the video into full-screen mode on one and keep the chat on the other monitor, Skype has made this simpler by having a "Show Messages" button that makes your video smaller and brings the IM chat window underneath in the same full-screen window. I can see this making sense.
  • It is all about video. The TechCrunch headline is accurate... my sense from watching the videos is that Skype 4.0 is really all about video. The new "Video Call" button does let you initiate a video call in a single click, versus the current way of making the call and then clicking the video button (or configuring Skype to automatically launch video). I agree with TechCrunch, though, that it is puzzling that Skype's video is still only one-to-one when there are so many others out there offering multi-party video chats.

I've included the three videos below that you can watch for yourself. The TechCrunch article also has some additional images and slides. I'd also watch Skype Journal's site as I know they'll have more details soon. Windows users will apparently be able to download the beta sometime tomorrow at http://www.skype.com/go/download-beta/. (We Mac users will just have to continue to whine... or, do what I'll probably do and fire up a Windows virtual machine to try it out.)

Skype is having a briefing tomorrow which I expect will be all about this, so I'll look forward to hearing what they have to say. I've heard some rumors (including from Andy's article) that the Skype 4.0 beta wipes out previous settings, so I'll be curious also to see if others write about those experiences (and provides another incentive for me to try it out in a VM). I'll also be curious to see how well Skype balances "simplifying" the user experience for new users while maintaining the functionality that "power users" have come to expect. It's a tough balancing act and it will be interesting to see how Skype does.

Can the carriers/telcos really create a Skype-killing replacement?

That's the question raised by Om Malik in "Global Telcos Plotting a Skype Rival?" and will be one of the topics of discussion on tomorrow's Squawk Box podcast. Om starts:
AT&T, in conjunction with some 10-15 incumbent telecom carriers — British Telecom, Deutsche Telecom and NTT among them — is plotting to launch a Skype competitor, according to a research report issued this morning by ThinkEquity analyst Anton Wahlman.

And goes on from there at some length into the theories, timeframes and capabilities of the rumored network. While I haven't had time personally to contribute directly to the conversation, others have:

Tracking iSkoot's security issue exposing Skype usernames and passwords

voipsalogo.jpgOver on the Voice of VOIPSA weblog, I have been tracking a security issue in the iSkoot program that was transmitting your Skype username and password in the clear. The post, its comments, and the corresponding links off of it make for some interesting reading.

It also shows the speed at which the blogosphere can react and potentially help sort things out. In the space of about 48 hours, a problem was found, confirmed, identified by the vendor and apparently will be fixed shortly. I'll be writing more about this later today over on the Voice of VOIPSA weblog, but for now I'll just say that it's great to see that the problem is being dealt with.

Skype further commoditizes voice with their "unlimited" subscription plans...

skype-unlimitedplans-20080421.jpgToday's buzz in the VoIP space is certainly Skype's announcement of new "unlimited" subscription plans. No contracts. No connection fees. No per-minute fees. Just a single flat, monthly fee.

The Global Difference

Now on the one hand, this isn't really new to those of us here in North America. We had an "unlimited" plan for all of NA that was good up until several months back when Skype dropped the plan and required everyone to move onto "Skype Pro". However, the big difference this time around is simple:

The unlimited plan is global!

Well, at least "global" in the sense that the 34 countries to which the plan pertains are indeed spread out all around the globe:

Regardless, it's an impressive list and, as Skype's news release reminds us, means you have "unlimited" calling to about a third of the world's population. (This statistic is, of course, hugely helped by the fact that the plan includes China!) So now with your PC, or 3 Skypephone over in Europe, you can now make an "unlimited" number of calls to regular old PSTN phone numbers in those countries.

Goodbye international calling plans!

Given that here in the USA, we've seen most all of the major mobile carriers move to "unlimited" calling plans that allow you to call anywhere in the US, this is definitely in keeping with those pricing plans. Except, of course, it's global.

Other Goodies

Beyond just the unlimited calling, Skype is also offering other "goodies" in the plan. As with most things related to Skype, the Skype Journal team has the best coverage of the announcements and lists these benefits:

  • Users can upgrade temporarily -- for instance, a Canadian or American traveling for two weeks to Europe can have an Unlimited World plan for the one month during which the travel occurs.
  • All plans include free call transfer (SkypeIn or Skype to SkypeOut) to numbers within the destination countries included in the user's plan.
  • All plans include a 50% discount for a SkypeIn number. (or multiple SkypeIn numbers on some plans)
  • All plans include voice mail
  • All plans include Skype To Go

Jim Courtney's article goes into further detail on all of this and is definitely worth a read.

Redefining "Unlimited"

Of course, I had to laugh at Skype joining into the game played by all the major carriers here in NA known as "redefining the word 'unlimited'". Several of the carriers here in the USA and also in Canada have at various times trumpeted their "unlimited" data plans... which of course were "unlimited" only according to the carrier's definition of unlimited... really something more like:

"Unlimited" = "unlimited calling up to a certain point that our finance folks have determined you start to impact our profit"

The linguistic pedant in me cringes every time I see a "unlimited" plan and I had the same knee-jerk reaction when seeing Skype's announcement. You can see it clearly on their Fair Usage page or in this image with the asterisks net to "unlimited calls":

Now, in fairness to Skype, 10,000 minutes per month is a whopping long time! Basically that nets out to 5 to 5.5 hours on the phone every single day of the month. If you are spending that much time on the phone EVERY day (outside of your work), well... I'd just be amazed. (I suppose there might be long-distance relationships that might come close, but still!) I would expect Skype's major reason for doing this would be to strain out business users that might seek to use Skype for large blocks of calling. I'm sure Skype also does have very real costs that they incur for PSTN termination (although I'm sure they get good rates).

Other Views

Over on VoIP Watch, Andy Abramson notes that an advantage for Skype is that this moves their revenue stream to a more predictable monthly basis (rather than having the cash-flow variability of annual renewals) and also that it allows more flexibility for users to add and delete services.

Mark Evans also had an interesting take today in "The Sexier Story is Growth" noting that the far more interesting point about Skype is their growth:

Consider Skype’s first-quarter results: another 33 million users came on board, boosting the number of registered users to 309 million. Meanwhile, year-over-year revenue climbed 61% to $126-million and Skype-to-Skype minutes rose 30% to 14.2 billion. So, what you’ve got is a high-growth business that will likely have sales of $500-million in 2008.

Indeed that definitely is something to consider. (Jim Courtney also covered the topic here and here.)

Conclusion

In the end, rolling out these new plans is undoubtedly a great move for Skype. With all their Oprah momentum here in the USA and the 3 Skypephone in Europe, they've certainly made some gains. Now they continue disrupting the telecom industry by removing distance from the equation (for the most part). It will be interesting to see over time what this does or does not do to the ranks of subscribers. Regardless, it should be fun to watch as Skype continues to spread.

As for me, the reality is that as more and more friends have moved on to Skype, I honestly have fewer and fewer people outside of family to call on the PSTN. Given that most all the people I call internationally are already on Skype, I may wind up buying the Unlimited US & Canada plan just to be able to call some of those folks out on the PSTN. I mean, at $36/year... or apparently $24/year if you buy before June 1... it's hard to argue against that for "unlimited" calls within the US and Canada. :-)

Skype 2.7 for the Mac publicly released (back in February)

skype_logo.pngThis is relatively old news, now, but if you didn't know, Skype released version 2.7 for the Mac back in February. I'd been using the 2.7 beta for quite some time, but missed the announcement that the production version had been released. (Annoyingly the "Check for Updates" in the 2.7 beta never indicated that there was a newer version.) I just learned of the production version as a result of an amusing little bug that I'll write about sometime. :-)

If you are a Mac user and haven't upgraded to 2.7, I've been using version 2.7 for quite some time and have been quite pleased with it. The integration with the Mac's native Address Book is quite nice to have.

Creating voice applications that interconnect with Skype and SIP

voxeologo.gifGiven that I write on Voxeo's blog site, I tend not to write much here about things we are doing at Voxeo.

But I thought I'd mention here one specific post I put up recently called "Skype-ifying your voice applications" which talks about the intriguing ways in which you can use our hosted platform to make voice applications accessible through a number of different mechanisms.

voxeo-inbound-outbound-1.jpgAs shown in the diagram to the left, an application that you write and is hosted on our platform can be called into over the PSTN, over a direct SIP connection or via Skype or FWD. Likewise calls can go out to PSTN numbers or to SIP endpoints.

This flexibility is one of the many things that intrigues me about the platform (of which I knew nothing about prior to joining the company in October).

Skype releases new 3.8 beta for Windows

skype_logo.pngIf you are on Windows, you can now download Skype 3.8 beta. As Raul Liive indicates, this beta release is primarily focused on quality improvements, including improved audio quality.

I did find it interesting that Skype wrote their own UPnP implementation for this release and stopped using Microsoft's UPnP code. UPnP ("Universal Plug and Play") is one of those things you either love or hate. Consumers love it because it lets applications "just work" through their home firewall. Security folks like me usually loathe it because UPnP punches holes in firewalls (and lacks any kind of authentication whatsoever). However, it makes sense for Skype to attempt to use UPnP and, given what they wrote, it makes sense for them to write their own version and not be subject to the issues with Microsoft's version.

I'll be curious to hear what others think of the Skype 3.8 beta for Windows... given that I'm on a Mac these days, I won't be giving it a try.

The Oprah-tization of VoIP via Skype!

Well, we are... or more precisely "Oprah" and "Skype". If you have no idea what I am talking about, you need to head over to Skype Journal and read Jim Courtney's piece: "Skype Sponsors Oprah's 'A New Earth' Web Event"

Essentially, Oprah has taken her Book Club online to host a weekly web collaboration session for the next ten weeks with, oh, 750,000 members of her club! More information - and an audio introduction from Oprah - is available on the Skype campaign page. Monday night was the first first session and as Jim subsequently noted (as did Howard Wolinsky on the new Skype US blog), the session didn't go so well with regard to technical issues. As Oprah's company, Harpo Productions (Hint: spell "Harpo" backwards) said in their statement:

Monday night's webcast was one of the largest single online events in the history of the Internet. More than 500,000 people simultaneously logged on to watch Oprah Winfrey and Eckhart Tolle live, resulting in 242 Gbps of information moving through the Internet. Unfortunately, some of our users experienced delays in viewing the webcast. We are working to identify the specific causes for the problems experienced and will work diligently to rectify them.

252 Gbps, eh? I think that's bringing new meaning to "disruptive telephony/communication!" I'll have to ask next week at IETF-71 if anyone there ever thought we'd see that kind of throughput! Pretty cool, on one level, but it obviously taxed the Internet a wee bit - or at least the connections into the servers running all of this. They go on to say:

Harpo Productions, Inc., Move Networks and Limelight Networks recognize that interactive Internet broadcasting to a mass audience is still an emerging medium

Yep!

But as Jim notes in his post, there are some definite wins for Skype here. Apparently the Skype portions of the web conference, which involved people asking questions over Skype High Quality Video, worked very well. There were also apparently some great statements from Oprah about how great she thought Skype was.

Kudos to Skype for getting in there in such a massive event - I can honestly say that I never would have thought I'd be writing about Oprah here. It will be interesting to see how the subsequent sessions go.

And for all us who are not joining in - for the next 9 weeks, Monday nights are probably a good time to stay off the Internet! (You know... read a book... play a game... go for a walk... ;-)

Congrats to Skype on hitting 100 BILLION minutes!

skype_logo.pngA huge congrats to Skype for hitting the milestone of over 100 BILLION minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls! As Skype's Villu Aruk notes in his amusing post, it's rather hard to wrap your head around numbers of this size. Congrats to all the folks involved with Skype... it is a milestone to celebrate.

The EComm 2008 Interview with Skype's Jonathan Christensen should be required reading...

42F19C6B-67C5-433E-91B4-641B9323CD48.jpgAs we enter into the final month before eComm 2008, I would suggest that the interview with Jonathan Christensen, Skype's general manager of audio and video, should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in this space. Why? Well, in part because Jonathan Christensen does provide some good information about what Skype has done and is doing but also because it provides some good insight into what one of the people driving Skype's agenda is thinking about this space. Take one of the final paragraphs where he answered Lee Dryburgh's question about what he saw as the the future of communications (bold emphasis added by me):
Well, a big question I guess and, having worked on the space for quite a while, I think that it's only going to get more interesting over the coming years since, well, like this open spectrum for example. You know, I just have to reiterate, I think that anybody who has not figured out that the Internet is the platform and that there isn't any such thing as walled gardens that will survive, or sub-networks [such as AOL tried] that are going to survive, those people are doomed. The intersection of these worlds is going to be chaotic. It's going to be violent. It's going to be messy for a while but it is going to happen, and the Internet will survive as the one open platform. You are going to see a trend towards extreme innovation at the edges - on the devices, in the PC platform, in software, all around the edge of the Internet.

I think that you are only going to see further disruption of the telecom industry and the emergence of totally new businesses that we can't imagine today. I think that [the] net result, that drives me every day, is that we're going to have this very rich, open, cheap and accessible communications. This is going to be not just a game changer for the telecom industry, but will be a change agent for all of humanity. So, a platform that allows us all to see each other and hear each other more clearly maybe makes us a little bit less crazy, less polarized and more open as a world society.

Good stuff... and the whole interview is worth a read. Given my recent criticism of Skype, I'm particularly pleased to read the comments I emphasized in bold. Jonathan Christensen will be giving one of the keynotes at eComm 2008, March 12-14 in Silicon Valley and if you haven't considered going, I would encourage you to do so. It should be a great event!

Skype says "No" to VoIP interoperability - *because customers aren't asking for it!* - Well, I am!

skype_logo.pngSo Skype says that they have no plans for interoperability with other VoIP systems because their customers aren't asking for it??

By way of Dameon Welch-Abernathy today I learned of Phil Wolff's post back in December about ZDNet's interview (Got all that? ;-) with Skype's VP of telecoms, Stefan Oberg. The article was primarily about Skype's London phone number debacle, but this was the part that most irritated me:

Another issue which may concern business users of VoIP is the Enum registry, which aims to unite not only the various VoIP providers — referred to by some as "islands" due to their lack of interconnection with each other — but the entire VoIP and traditional telephony worlds.

Asked whether Skype had considered opening up its famously closed communications protocols, Oberg claimed that there had been no customer demand for interconnection. "[Customers] are not saying they would love to call a VoIP provider on a different network," he said. "Customers are asking for better video and better conference calling. If it is something that customers really ask for, we would consider it, but it is very easy for anyone to get on the island."

Well, Mr. Oberg, here is one paying customer of Skype who can state unequivocally:

"I would love to call a VoIP provider on a different network!"

Here's the thing, Mr. Oberg. There are a whole lot of us out there who are looking to build the next voice communication network. We're looking forward to the day when today's PSTN is just some story that greybeards get together and reminisce about. ("Remember when we used to have to dial numbers? And wait for the connections? And remember how much we had to pay our phone companies for the privilege? And remember those 'busy signals'?") We're looking to make it simpler and easier and so that ultimately voice just smoothly fits in to our communication as one of the several different ways we communicate. (others being text/IM, video, etc.)

The funny thing is that many, if not most, of us experimenting with what will be next are Skype users. Probably in many cases paying Skype users since we have Skype Credit and SkypeIn numbers. Because, like you said, Skype makes it "very easy for anyone to get on the island." You do a lot of things right. You've got a very simple and easy-to-use client. Your directory is good. Your use of wideband audio usually gives outstanding audio quality. Your ability to work from very different network environments and through firewalls is great. Some of us love that everything you do is encrypted. You work across the major computing platforms. You make a great product and because you have hit a critical mass with so many of us there, we like to use your product.

But... with statements like this you're living in the same delusion that Facebook has been in until recently. You see, there's this wee tiny little problem:

You are NOT the only island!

Sure, you're probably the largest island with the most parties and easiest docks to land at. But there are a lot of other islands out there. Some of them are other services with whom you admittedly compete. Some are startups. Some of them are the traditional carriers now offering VoIP services to consumers and businesses. A lot of other islands are the companies and organizations now wiring themselves up with IP-PBXs or using back office software from Microsoft or IBM to "voice-enable" their infrastructure. Ditto for some cities and towns that are doing the same thing. In some cases, those islands are wiring voice so far into their business processes and systems that it's truly amazing.

Now some of us, seeing all these islands out there, say... "Hmmm... why don't we just connect the dots?" Let's build some bridges or high-speed ferries between those islands. Let's get them talking together. Let's interconnect the islands and build the new infrastructure. Let's bypass the old PSTN and build the new voice network entirely across the Internet. Let's forget all about those geographic boundaries... let's let voice flow to wherever wherever someone can get an IP address. Anywhere. Anytime. Let's interconnect business systems with other voice systems.

And you know what? We're doing it. Slowly. Very slowly at times. But we're doing it. We're using protocols like SIP and RTP and all the many others coming out of the IETF. We're creating "mashups" and using XML flavors like VoiceXML and CCXML to weave voice into the web. We're starting the interconnection. We're enabling businesses to connect to each other and dial each other directly. We're using SIP trunking to let local systems make and receive phone calls from other parts of the world. We're giving people their choice of endpoint... they can use a range of "hard" phones (traditional pieces of hardware) or "soft" phones (like you are). People can ring my deskphone simply by calling "dyork@corpsip.voxeo.com" using their SIP phone... goodbye hard-to-remember telephone numbers... hello user names.

Oh, sure, we've got lots of problems still to work out. Security is a huge one. You are extending your trust boundary out to include other networks. How do you know they won't send you tons of voice spam? Or abuse your network? Or run up bills on your dime? Privacy is another one. How do you show others only the information you want to? Sooner or later the various governments and tax authorities are going to wake up and realize how badly they are going to be screwed out of revenue by all we are doing - and we're going to have to deal with that. We've still got to agree on how to do certain features between systems. We've got a lot of work to do.

But we're doing it. We're rewiring the phone system. We're creating a new one, not shackled by its history.

The question for you all at Skype seems to be whether or not you want to help build that larger interconnected world. Or whether you want to just hang out on your island and hope that if you throw big enough parties and advertise "Free Beer" enough that everyone will forget about their own islands and just come over and join yours.

You know what? You'll get a lot of people to come on over. Today. And probably for some time. You've got a fun island to hang out on.

Meanwhile, the rest of us will keep on with our rewiring and remixing. We're building the fabric of what comes next. We're coding the DNA for the future of voice. We'd love it if you joined us. I'd love it. It would be great if I could call my colleagues on SIP extensions from directly within Skype. Not through some Skype-to-PBX gateway that really winds up running multiple instances of Skype... but through an actual SIP gateway. I'd love it if I could give them a SIP address like "dyork@sip.skype.com" that they could use to call me on my Skype client wherever I was. You know, I'd probably wind up using my Skype client more if I had that capability! You have a great UI. Why shouldn't I add my SIP contacts there, too?

What SIP contacts you say? Yes, clearly I'm an "early adopter"... one of those geeks who goes around chasing bright shiny objects. Guilty as charged. But each day what I do is becoming easier and easier for others to do. And you know what? If you supported SIP contacts, those of us who talk and write about topics like this would probably do a lot to evangelize you. We'd actually help you with your marketing.

Now you do make this excellent point:

"In order to provide richness, we have to create our own protocols," Oberg added. "SIP and the standard [VoIP] protocols simply can't do it."

You're right. Almost all the traditional vendors in the VoIP space do use their own proprietary protocols to give the rich communication experience people want. Cisco. Nortel. Avaya. Alcatel. Mitel. Others. But you know what? Their hold on the market is being disrupted. Lots of new players coming in. Big ones like Microsoft and IBM - who are interestingly supporting the open standards we're using. So the traditional vendors are evolving, too. They're supporting SIP for interconnection. Sure, they still have their parties on their islands and show people how great it is there, but they do allow bridges to be built. They understand the need to interconnect.

You're right, too, in that SIP only supports basic calls. We know that. We're working on it. So come join us. Join the IETF mailing lists. Send someone to IETF 71 in Philadelphia in March. Advocate for how we should interconnect to you. Building the Interconnect is long, often glacially-slow work, full of many people with different agendas, many of whom will all disagree. Join with us. You'll lose some battles and win others. But together we might just have a chance at making it all happen.

Or... just keep hanging out on your island throwing parties and trying to attract new people. Maybe it will work.

In the meantime, please don't say that customers aren't asking for interoperability. Count me as one who is:

"I would love to call a VoIP provider on a different network!"

I bet if I ask around, a few of the people I know would like that, too.

Voice mashups - Notes on Alec's conference call today

As I mentioned in an earlier post today, Alec Saunders convened a 30-minute conference call today on voice mashups. The call was recorded and will be available as a podcast from his site. (I'll add the link here once I'm online.)

I was traveling down through the state of Vermont today and so while I had no Internet access I did call in and joined the call from my Blackberry. (My wife was driving the car at the time.) I wrote down the following notes on my laptop during the call.


Alec introduced the call, mentioned that it would be recorded and distributed as a podcast. He then muted all the callers except for himself, Thomas Howe, Jim Courtney and Andy Abramson. For callers with Facebook open, they could press a button to "raise their hand" at which point Alec could unmute them. I was calling in on my cell phone while traveling with no Internet access, so for me it was to press "*2" to raise my hand.

Alec tossed out the first question which was "what is a voice mashup?" Thomas laid out one definition which Andy then amplified. Alec then asked if a mashup could involve something like Skype to which Jim described the results of the Skype Mashup contest and the winning PamFax app. Alec asked for examples and Thomas gave several. Alec asked how this looked like to the end-user. Thomas mentioned that it could be a web interface, but it might also simply be a telephone interface. The user would just call a number and do some kind of service. (Thanks for the mention of Voxeo, Thomas!)

Alec asked next "why do people build these?" Thomas... they are lightweight, easy to put together, easy to build for small interest groups (and therefore easy to put together a business case). Most ubiquitous interface is the phone. Business case can be small, but because of the architecture the application can actually scale massively if necessary. Jim... talked about ROI of PamFax... ability to take business documents from one location to another. Andy... mashup apps need to serve a purpose. Small, focused apps will be the general rule. However, that can be repurposed. You can globally deliver an app to small pockets of people who need that application. Andy recommends you look at Salesforce.com's app exchange. Mentions Mashery and the work they are doing looking into how you manage the rights around the use of mashup apps.

Alec - "So how do you monetize mashups?" Thomas... at least 3 hooks for monetization: 1) make businesses run faster, eliminate delays; 2) customer satisfaction - giving users a view into your system without; 3) make businesses more efficient. Question from (Dean - someone on wall) - who is making the money? Thomas - most of the work is in professional services. Focus is on developing apps, not necessarily in sale of apps.

(At this point I pressed *2 to raise my hand to ask a question related to monetization. A few minutes later I pressed *2 again.)

Tony from Voxalot talked about his voice mashup for an Australian dating site that allows users to be anonymous callers. Jim Courtney mentioned that PamFax is getting revenue on every transaction. Tony, I believe, also mentioned that Alec is getting revenue based on the usage of his conference call app.

Thomas... mashup architectures allow you to not have to pay upfront capital costs. You don't have to pay for a phone number and manage it, for instance. You can just temporarily use a phone number. Mashup architectures lower the barriers to entry.

As it was now 10:00am, Alec suggested that we should wrap up the call and throw it out to the assembled crowd for questions. It sounded from the tone of his voice that he wasn't seeing anyone raising their hand (and I was wondering what happened to my *2!). Thomas started answering...


... and then I entered one of those glorious pockets of Vermont where Verizon has no cell phone coverage - and so I was dropped off the call. Since it sounded like it was going to be wrapping up, I didn't bother calling back in a few minutes later when I was back in a coverage area.

All in all it was an interesting discussion. It undoubtedly could have gone on much longer. As I've been wanting to write more about this whole topic of voice mashups, I'll probably have some further posts on this soon.

It was also an interesting usage of Alec's Facebook "Free Conference Calling" application. The Iotum gang has certainly developed that app further and I'll definitely be looking at it again and toying with some ideas about how to use it. The recording feature is certainly an interesting one for someone who likes producing podcasts... :-) (Although it does not seem to be wideband so you are still limited to lousy PSTN audio.)

Large-scale conference calls with *better* voice quality than the PSTN (using Skype)

skype_logo.pngOne interesting development in the world of Skype last week which I've seen little mention of is the fact that the folks at Highspeedconferencing.com have rolled out a Skype Extra that lets Skype users have large-scale conference calls. Like most such large conference bridges, they have moderation/"hand-raising", call recording, email invites, etc. However, the key point to me is that their conferencing bridge uses the wideband audio supported by Skype! That is the key. You now have conference calling with audio quality that is far better than the PSTN! This is where we start to get into the space where VoIP can offer a truly different - and better - user experience than traditional telephony. The Skype blog touches on this:
HighSpeed Conferencing is the only audio conferencing service available to Skype users that offers high-definition (HD) voice quality. There’s no degradation of audio quality, no matter how many Skype users participate in a conference call. And with unlimited usage during a conference call, you can talk as much as you want. Some people stay on the conference bridge all day.
I've not yet used the service as right now I'm not involved with large conference calls, but at the point that I do I will very definitely check it out. (On a tangent, I wonder if Polycom has a trademark on "HD Voice"?) Have any of you tried it out?

Skype and secure SIP? (Why would I see this message?)

200710261520Whenever I'm using Skype, I have the "Display technical call info" setting enabled so that I see technical stats about the calls I am on. Those windows tend to stay around after a call... and I noticed this one still around with an identity of "securesip". (click on the image for a larger version) I've tried to replicate this with calls that I've recently made to see if I could get the window again, but can't seem to do so. Anyone know why I might be seeing this?

I'm curious...

Use Skype from anywhere (providing you have GSM coverage) - Skype releases "3Skypephone" and joins the mobile game

200710291210The big news out today in the world of Skype is that Skype and the mobile carrier called "3" have released the "3 Skypephone" that lets Skype users take Skype truly mobile. Skype-to-Skype calls and IMs are "free" provided that you are on "3"'s mobile network. I say "free" in quotes because of course you have to have a wireless plan through 3. There are actually two options in the UK, which is the only country in which it will initially be available:

  • Monthly - With this plan, the 3 Skypephone hardware itself is free and the rates are 12-17 British pounds per month. Apparently you have unlimited data connectivity with this plan, so you can in fact make unlimited numbers of Skype calls or IMs.
  • Pay-As-You-Go - With this plan, you pay 50 pounds for the 3Skypephone phone itself and then keep your account filled with credits. Apparently data usage decrements this account (but it's not clear by how much), so you have to wonder how often people will need to recharge the account. (UPDATE: Julian Bond, who is in the UK and has a 3 Skypephone to experiment with, informs me that there is apparently no charge for data usage on the Pay-As-You-Go, but it is only available for "30 days after your last top-up". So as long as you top up each month you would apparently get the data usage for free.)

These plans also factor into your non-Skype calls, i.e. calls to regular PSTN phone numbers. The phone does work just like a regular cell phone, but calls you make do not go out via SkypeOut but rather through 3's mobile network. So if you are: 1) calling other Skype users; and 2) on 3's wireless network; then all your calls are "free" (subject to your calling plan).

All in all an interesting play. We won't see it in North America for some time (and I probably won't see it in Vermont until the next millenia) but it will be available in the UK on Friday and by the end of the year in Australia, Italy, Hong Kong, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and the Republic of Ireland.

The phones themselves look quite nice. There are three colors (or two colors with one of the colors having two different color bands):

eBay pays $530 million to buy out Skype founders - and writes down value of Skype by $900 million

Not necessarily a great day over at Skype today - per the eBay news release, Niklas Zennstrom stepped down as CEO, eBay paid $533 million to "settle obligations to certain Skype shareholders" and is also taking a $900 million charge to write down the value of Skype. From a Bloomberg article:
``It has not performed as well as we would have hoped in the short term,'' EBay spokesman Hani Durzy said in an interview. Skype was profitable the first half of the year, he said.

Additional thoughts on Skype and hotel networks - there's issues on both sides...

To my immense surprise, my article yesterday about my challenges with Skype and my hotel Internet connection just hit TechMeme today, so welcome, anyone who is coming my way from there. But that also prompted me to want to offer up some additional thoughts on the subject.

First, I'm actually quite annoyed at the Best Western here in Ontario, CA, for essentially blocking Skype by virtue of their network security traffic policies. If travel shall bring me to Ontario, CA, again, you can be pretty sure that I will not be staying here. Skype has become an important communication tool for me and <cue violins>was the way I was intending to call home and stay in touch with my family</violins>. Skype has worked great at the hotel I was at earlier in the week in Phoenix and in fact at every other hotel I've been at lately. I do intend to contact Best Western to express my dissatisfaction at being unable to use the program.

Having said that, as a security professional I do understand WHY the security team at the Internet provider to this Best Western hotel has the policies in place that they do. As Phil Wolff commented, Skype's launch "can look like the beginning of port scanning or a bot-gone-wild". Given that this provider is dealing with hotel rooms where random strangers are connecting who-knows-what onto the network, they have to be extremely vigilant (especially because customers like me while complain quickly if Internet access is slow/unavailable). The more I think about it, hotel networks are really an absolute nightmare from a security point-of-view. You have no way to enforce virus protection, people can put all sorts of machines in all sorts of states onto the network, systems with spyware can easily be scanning/attacking your network -it's really pretty crazy and I'm glad that I'm not involved with running such a network! (Although the security geek in me would admit that the aggregate data they must get from network traffic would probably be fascinating.) However, there is probably a compromise out there where the ISP can tune its filtering rules so that if it sees such traffic and can identify it as Skype traffic, it can not trigger the MAC lock-out.

Which brings me to the final point that there's a lesson here for anyone developing P2P apps, or I suppose any other apps that have a similar traffic profile. If the apps generates traffic that looks like a bot or port scan, odds are that it will be blocked in some places like this one (and the hotel Phil was at). It would be great if developers could take that into account and either: a) naturally put in some kind of rate throttling; or b) perhaps provide a "hotel mode" where it throttles back the number of sessions to some (perhaps user-settable but with a default) value. This of course would make it longer for things like presence information to appear, but would at least let you continue to operate the program without triggering the network security alarms. Of course, you'd have to change to that mode, which many people would forget to do and wind up being locked out, but it might be an interesting "advanced" option for those who know what to do with it.

How using Skype disrupted my hotel Internet connection and locked me out

UPDATE: I have now posted some additional thoughts about this issue.


It's been a frustrating time here at the hotel in Ontario, CA, where all I've been trying to do is use the Internet connection. I'm staying at the Best Western and did so largely because they advertised free high-speed Internet (they were also cheaper than others). First annoyance was discovering that I was too far away from their APs to use wireless, but since I had an ethernet cable I just plugged into the wall jack and expected to get access. The very first time I connected, I did get an IP address and could see an entry in my routing table for the default gateway. However, I couldn't ping it.

Being rather used to network troubleshooting, I did the usual things... bringing the interface up and down, disconnecting and re-connecting the cable. I even went to the hotel lobby and got a new cable in case the issue was with my portable/retractable cable.

Nothing. No net.

In desperation I did the thing that tech support always tells you to do but I avoid... reboot. Nothing.

So finally this morning I got on the phone to the Best Western tech support and after waiting, oh, 20 minutes or so I got through to a tech and ultimately we figured out the problem:

Skype!

More specifically, all the bizillion connections that Skype was making out into the P2P cloud. The tech reset the switch and asked me to connect again and his immediate response was "Whoa! Something on your computer is generating an incredible number of sessions out to the Internet! You are tripping our filters and it is blocking out your MAC address." With him on the phone, we tried some experimentation. I shut down Skype, at which point he said I was generating much more normal traffic. As soon as I launched it again, he noticed a very large jump in the number of session connections I was establishing. He said it was something like 396 sessions he was seeing coming from my computer. He also said that I'll keep being locked out of their system if I keep Skype running.

So I shut down Skype. Which, of course, is annoying. Part of why I wanted to use the high-speed Internet is to use Skype for IM and for voice/video calls.

I find it a bit odd that Skype was generating so much extra traffic, but then again I am pretty much always connected into several persistent group chats and had maybe 8 or 10 individual chat windows still open that I'd left open from when I'd last been chatting with the person. (The Mac Skype client makes this easy to do, but I'll write about that sometime.) The persistent group chats, especially, do generate a good number of connections as they link out into the P2P cloud. Perhaps if I closed all of those windows and killed off all my individual chat windows Skype might have behaved better. (Or perhaps not, I might have had to leave the persistent chats in order for Skype to stop making those connections.) I don't want to try it out, because I do want to keep my Internet connection up right now.

In any event, should you be at a hotel and find yourself unable to connect... it might be a P2P app like Skype tripping off the hotel's filters and blocking your access. Fun, fun, fun....

Skype Mashup Contest: And the European winner is......

image The first result of the Skype Mashup contest was announced yesterday at the Skype developer event in Prague, and the winner is....

PamFax!

Yes... a fax application!  As Jim Courtney writes over on Skype Journal (he was also one of the judges):

The PamConsult team created PamFax to solve the problem of providing a very simple process (especially relative to the somewhat cumbersome WinFax) of using the Internet to easily fax an MS Office document anywhere worldwide. The primary Skype feature here has nothing to do with voice; they used the Skype Extras publishing platform not only to install the application but also as a transaction processor for collecting revenues for the service using Skype credits. Skype Chat is used to send notifications re a fax's delivery. In addition they developed a web-based portal to manage and archive your use of the service. The application can be launched from the Skype Extras menu or from within MS Excel or MS Word. A link to Google Maps will also show roughly where the fax is being sent (to within an Area Code).

The interesting aspect to me is how it uses Skype's micro-payment infrastructure.  No need for credit cards or anything... it just debits your Skype Credit.  Your Skype Credit, in turn, can be linked to your PayPal account... which can then pull money from credit cards or bank accounts.  So you wind up with a very effective and simple way to bill people for services rendered.

Jim goes on to explain a bit more about what PamConsult did:

PamConsult married the Google Maps API's, Microsoft Office COM objects and a backend fax API with their long term experience using the Skype API's. They started a year ago this summer with development of specifications; coding commenced in January with an initial version available in May. After a beta testing program in July, PamFax was released as a Skype Extra in the second week of August.

As noted in the Skype Developer blog post, winners in the US and Japan will be announced at those specific events over the next couple of weeks.

Skype Journal: "The Dawn of the Mashup World"

For a couple of months now, a post has been swirling around in my brain that I was tentatively titling "The Dawn of the Mashup Culture" in which I wanted to talk about "mashups" and why they are so incredibly important.  Unfortunately I just haven't had the time to put all those thoughts into the written word.

Well, in the meantime, Jim Courtney went off and wrote something very close to what I was intending to do:  "The Dawn of the Mashup World - Part 1: Challenges, Why and Expectations"  followed by "Part 1a: What is a Mashup?"

Read them.  (And the follow-on posts that Jim indicates he's writing.)

Mashups are fundamentally changing the way we can use and control services.  It's the remix culture. 

You need to understand it... because if you don't, your products and services will be left behind.

Open APIs win.  Mashups win.

Skype is now 4 years old...

Since voipstutter thinks I should rename this blog "Skype Telephony", I may as well feed into that image by noting that, per the Skype blog, Skype is now 4 years old.  I was not a user then, but judging by the screenshots of the client in 2003, it certainly has come a long way.  Whatever your opinions of Skype, it certainly has caused disruptions in the world of telcom... and it definitely does keep things interesting.  Congrats to the folks at Skype for hitting that birthday.

It seems I've been added to the "Friends of Skype" blog roll on Skype's blogs

image I noticed late last night that this weblog was added to the "Friends of Skype" blog roll that appears on the side of Skype's blogs.  Thanks, Skype, for adding me... I certainly don't mind the potential for others to find me. I do write about Skype, although often some of that writing can be critical.

I'll note, too, that Skype's list is actually a great compilation of the various bloggers out there who write about VoIP and collaboration.  Many of them would think of themselves as  (and accept the label of) "VoIP bloggers", but others are from the larger blogging space (ex. Neville Hobson, Robert Scoble, Ross Mayfield).

VoiceCon - OnState expands their call center solution for Skype

image At VoiceCon this week, one of the smaller booths that looked quite interested was that of OnState, a company launching a Live Chat capability for their call center solution based on Skype.  With my schedule at the show, I was unable to spend much time going through a demo, but what I did see looked quite interesting and I thought I might blog about it at some point.

However, it turns out that Jim Courtney over at Skype Journal has written a rather comprehensive post about OnState, with all sorts of links to prior articles, resources, etc.  Now, Jim wrote his story primarily to address issues he found in two other stories about OnState, but the result is a nice profile of what the offering is all about.

I would have to wonder, though, what kind of reaction OnState was getting at VoiceCon given how recently the massive Skype outage was.  Anyway, I would recommend checking out Jim's article and the various links off of it.

IBM announces acquisition of WebDialogs, makers of Unyte!

image Wow!  From the stage here at VoiceCon, Michael Rhodin, General Manager of Lotus Software at IBM just announced that they are acquiring WebDialogs, the makers of Unyte!

IBM just issued a news release announcing this acquisition.

For those of us following the Skype space, Unyte has been known for a long-time as one of the leading business/collaboration extras available for Skype. 

Congrats to the WebDialogics folks and it will be VERY interesting to see where this goes!

Skype offers further clarification on the outage and the Microsoft connection (or lack thereof)

In answer to the many questions raised after their announcement yesterday, Skype today issued a clarification FAQ: "The Microsoft connection clarified".  For starters, they clearly stated that there was no connection to Microsoft:

1. Are we blaming Microsoft for what happened?

We don’t blame anyone but ourselves. The Microsoft Update patches were merely a catalyst — a trigger — for a series of events that led to the disruption of Skype, not the root cause of it. And Microsoft has been very helpful and supportive throughout.

The high number of post-update reboots affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources at the time, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact.

In response to the question that many of us raised (for instance, in my post yesterday) about "why this month's update?", Skype wrote:

2. What was different about this set of Microsoft update patches?

In short – there was nothing different about this set of Microsoft patches. During a joint call soon after problems were detected, Skype and Microsoft engineers went through the list of patches that had been pushed out. We ruled each one out as a possible cause for Skype’s problems. We also walked through the standard Windows Update process to understand it better and to ensure that nothing in the process had changed from the past (and nothing had). The Microsoft team was fantastic to work with, and after going through the potential causes, it appeared clearer than ever to us that our software’s P2P network management algorithm was not tuned to take into account a combination of high load and supernode rebooting.

The FAQ continues with answers to more questions.  All in all, a decent set of responses. 

Jim Courtney over at Skype Journal also offers his perspective on this statement.  I join Jim in thanking Skype PR for recognizing that their initial responses were insufficient.  I think a common thread in many responses to the initial communication was that we were looking for more transparency. Stuart Henshall, a very early Skype user and one of the founders of the Skype Journal, posted a good piece about communication and Skype:  "Outing Skype Communications".  Well worth a read.

With that, we can probably wrap up the outage coverage...  it looks like Skype users are already back to using it.
